If you are considering to get a hosting account from 1and1, you may want to (or probably have tried to) search for the keywords “1and1 Sucks” on Google. However, the result may confuse you. Perhaps you have read tons of good stuff and rave reviews about 1and1 thus far.
1and1 experiences and stories like below may make you think twice to signup with 1and1:
- “As you can imagine, I’ve been having some trouble with 1&1. They nixed by site by placing some kind of “lock” on it…”
- “…now going through another 1and1.com incident where my server has been down for over 36 hours.… ”
- “1and1 web hosting sucks – it’s slow and unreliable… “
If you go through each of Googles result pages, it seems there are hundreds of unsatisfied customers who have been through some sticky situation with 1and1. If you search for the keywords “1and1 sucks”, you see that there are more than 100 results by Google. That is a lot of bad things said about one hosting (assuming all those result pages talks about why this hosting provider really sucked). There may a few more result pages when you search for “1and1 scam”, “1and1 issues“, or ”1and1 problems“. Should these hate or complaint sites worry you after you have read so many positive reviews? Should hate pages make you change your mind?

Rethink. Do not dismiss the fact that 1and1 is one of the top 20 web hosting provider in America, the United Kingdom and even the world. They are one of the top web domain registration company in the world serving more than 7 millions customers world wide. You have read the other 1&1 reviews elsewhere. 1and1 does what a hosting company should do. That is, 1and1 actually answers their phones, replies to their emails, responds to live chat requests, doesn’t rip you off, and provides quality hosting. 1&1.com also has some of the best windows hosting plans around. So among the millions of satisfied clients, surely they will be a few who disagree. Let us look at the numbers above.
From the above number, only eight out of every 100,000 Google result pages about 1and1.com says that this hosting sucks. That is not bad after all isn’t it? This is still very good considering other hostings we have looked at have much worst ratio. The hate pages is really negligible for 1&1 web host. Don’t forget that they have servers in many countries other than US and UK.
We know, finding a good web hosting can be tiring and time consuming, when you should be building your blog or selling your product. So our verdict: Hostingsthatsuck.com Recommends 1&1 Hosting

You have to be kidding me.. probably only 0.5% of the people that are unhappy actually post a complaint and probaly ony 1% of those show up on Google.
1and1 sucks.. I have been a customer of theirs for many years and have finally decided .. at the cost of hunderds of $$ and many hours and headaches to move away from them…
They do not care about customers !!!
I hope they go out of business..
I don’t make up those numbers. You can check for yourself on Google.
I think more people with complaints will post on the internet. We usually keep quite if we are happy don’t we? Thus the ratio and the reliability of the hate pages should be way lower than above.
Since 1&1 has over 7 million global customers, hosts over 5.5 million websites, and has over 55,000 webservers, there are bound to be some people that 1&1 did not work out for. But they couldn’t possibly be doing everything wrong if 5 million site owners still trust them.
You try getting and keeping that many customers for your product/service. I guarantee you will not be able to keep all of them happy.
My guess is that smaller hosting companies might on occassion have fewer negative reviews probabbly have fewer customers, less wait time on problem resolution.
As for Jack, if you are (I am not saying you are) the same ‘Jack’ who claims to have a class action lawsuit against 1&1, (I saw this on another sucks site), shame you have nothing better to do than trash companies you hate. How about trashing poverty, global warming, war, famine – really important things that are worth complaining about.
If “haters” crusaded just as hard for companies they liked, I bet their lifes would change – for the better.
I agree with admin.

Okay here are the truths ;
- 1and1 may be a good choice for standard “.html” or “.php” customers but definitely not for asp.net builders!
- Doesnt support App_Browsers, App_Code folders where sometimes you have to use these files to keep your site running.
- One and the most important is DOESNT SUPPORT AJAX!
My conclusion is 1and1 really SUCKS. Stay away.
I think it is unfair to say it sucks only on the basis of you having some ASP.net code problems.
True, their website states that with the $9.99 hosting option it does support ASP.net. I don’t know about AJAX but for the price they offer, who cares?
The problem is, the posts that are recent AND are shared experiences by numerous individuals and companies indicate a potential issue which potential customers want to be, and should be, aware.
OTOH, the poster that slammed 1and1 for not being good hosts for ASP.net needs to reexamine the issue. The problem likely isn’t 1and1 but ASP.net. I wouldn’t use ASP.net if it were the last hosting option on the planet; I have yet to see a single ASP.net site that doesn’t work properly in non-IE browsers. (What really tickles me is that he is using ASP.net PLUS AJAX! What a hoot!)
I just bought a package from 1&1 and am very please with their support, features, and service. Because this is the first time I’ve actually bought a dedicated hosted server package, I decided to search around to see who offers the best value for money, and time and time again 1&1 came out the winner, which is why I decided to go with them.
For example, one company I contacted wanted £50 for each re-imaging of the server if things went terribly wrong. Another only had a 10Mbit pipe (1&1 supply 100Mbit). Yet all of these companies charged around the same £80 per month…
Admittedly I’ve only had the server for about 5 days now, but I’m more than happy with everything. Every time I fire off a ‘noob’ question to their support, I get an answer within about 30 minutes.
How are their e-commerce sites for Mac users?
We are all Mac all the time and that won’t change.
If they are not good – do you have any suggestions?
This site has the ring of one that is well paid by the top guns in the industry. I noticed that the Yahoo e-commerce site gets the same messaging. It has a better rating: 1&1 has 2.3 times as many “this sucks” ratiings per 100,000. The price for the enhanced versions is much cheaper with 1&1.
I wish it was easy to find a real comparison of the different sites and real conversation.
This well paid site does bring out some good points.
Thank you for your thoughts in advance.
Regardless if you are using Mac or Windows, if you need an ecommerce site, I would definitely recommend Yahoo! Store. They are the best ecommerce hosting provider for sure.
ps: What platform you use on the web hosting server is not affected much by what OS you have on your desktop (Mac, PC or Linux)
I’ve been a 1&1 customer for four years now, and I have nothing bad to say about them.
I won’t say they’re perfect – the hosting packages are security intensive (no remote MySQL testing in Dreameweaver, say) but that security is also in your favour.
Support is fast and always professional.
I have a Professional hosting package and the mid-range XL VPS account, and never feel the need to shop elsewhere. Highly recommended.
I was a 1&1 customer for roughly 5 years. I’m not going to say their service sucks, but their billing SUCKS! I had no problems with them until I tried cancelling. I tried cancelling the first time in early august. Today (November 16 2009), I finally had to call them and confim my account was cancelled because I continued getting bills. When asked to cancel my bills they sent after my initial cancel, they said no and I will be reported to NCO (thier debt collector) if I don’t pay them.
They said when I filled out the cancellation form in August that their system was down and the request was not processed. Instead of telling me that, they continue to send bills. Once I recieved the bills they said to call and do it over the phone with the number they gave. I called the number and it has a message saying “You cannot be assisted right now, please try again later” and hangs up.
After reporting those problems they send me to a different cancel link and form. I fill that out and finally my account is fixed. This is mid september. I just recieved another $100 bill from them in mid november. – go figure.
So if you use 1 and 1, their service is good, just be ready to stay there for the rest of your life because cancelling with them is almost impossible!
Good Luck! Contact me if you want to know a good realiable host.
Use Paypal when dealing with 1and1 and not your credit card. It is a shame that their nice stable servers are not complimented by a good billing system.
Again, use Paypal! You can easily cancel the payment contract with them by going to Profile > Pay List
I had a problem with 1&1 charging me for something I didn’t ask for, and with the wealth of dissatisfied customers complaining online I expected not to receive the money back. I sent an email and the next day sent letters to the complaints department and to the manager by recorded delivery, and within a week had a response acknowledging the mistake and giving me a recredited invoice. Granted it took the full 15 days for my credit card to be reimbursed, but it happened. So I decided to post this online to counteract some of the negative press.
I still believe a company that doesn’t have a complaints phone line is misguided. We all need to speak to someone when we have a complaint, otherwise you feel you’re not likely to get a response.
1 and 1 is great. Love them to bits and never had an issue, host four domains with them since early last year, one of the domains uses their web developer package which includes a bunch of stuff that other operators charge a lot extra for.
Was with Yahoo before, pleased as punch to have swapped over.
I just got billed for the first three “free” months of my new plan with 1and1. That one they advertise so much with the first 3 months free. I called them, but they were closed at 4 pm pacific time. They sent me an e-mail letting me know that they will charge my credit card for the first 3 months which according to my offer were supposed to be free. Was it a glitch? Lets wait and see….
well, just to update i have 1and1 crapping servers and unable to do enough for me…
how?
i went to BBC watchdog, and then emailed 1and1 legal telling them i am sick of them and i have done this. not to mention the fact i told them due to the inability of their service i have had to spend £70 through nominet to get my business sites sorted.. and i will be invoicing them and if they dont pay i will see them in court.
my letter:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would request this outstanding amount (reference above) be offset against the £70.50 (currently) I have had to spend on transferring domains (with Nominet) that 1and1 failed to do within their own set time limits.
If this matter of an outstanding £70.50 (currently) is not resolved within 10 working days I will start a small claims procedure against 1and1 internet.
I am also informing 1and1 internet and Avarto finance I have taken steps in reporting both companies to trading standards and BBC’s Watchdog for failing to comply with conditions set out to protect consumers on matter of debt collection.
Specifically the matter that 1and1 has to inform me by letter that they have passed this over to an agency by Royal mail delivery or other means BEFORE the agency contacts me.
As these domains are paid for by a business, I will be billing 1and1 internet for these costs.
On all occasions we have dealt this has not been the case.
I look forward to dealing with you, 1and1 and the other agencies on these matter’s.
Regards
Mat
bish bash bosh….. i’ll keep you updated
win to the small man ??? WATCH THIS SPACE
I have used 1&1 for hosting for probably 4 years. I recently encountered one of my site’s IP addresses being blacklisted due to spam. I got the reports from MAPS which showed this being an issue since 2007, which explains the problems I was encountering with mail relaying through this IP address. When I sent the MAPS reports to 1&1 (and I might add, this is the second time I have contacted them about the issue in the last 3-4 months) this is the response I received:
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this has brought you. This is an issue with one of our IP address being blocked. This is already known and reported to our developers. At the moment, we do not have an estimated time frame for the fix however rest assured that we are currently working on a resolution. Once we have the fix, it will be implemented to all affected customers. To ensure that your case will be taken cared of, I will be adding the details of your case to the list of affected customers. We understand that you might be anxious to have this resolved as soon as possible so thank you so much for your patience while we work on the resolution.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.”
So they are telling me that I should just “wait for the fix”? Meantime my email gets bounced left and right…
I have given them a day/time when I expect a resolution, or I am transferring my domains and canceling my contracts with them for failure to perform. I am also going to go after them for a portion of my past payments for the same reason.

You are happy until you need to cancel and the bills keep on coming!!! Stay clear.
The call centre person reassured that my SSL cert is cancelled on the 23/02/2011, and 29/03/2011 I got billed for another 3 months. It has now become again my problem to sort out with them.
Be prepared to spend hours on a premium number.
They Suck!
I’ve been a 1 and 1 customer for 5 or 6 years and have several sites hosted there.
I have NEVER had one problem with them. I’ve needed tech support only a couple of times and did feel like I had to run through a gauntlet of people to get my problems solved but to be fair, I was asking rather bizarre, very techy stuff and didn’t expect the first person answering the phone to have the answers I was looking for. It took 24 hours in one case but I got an email with my answer.
I’ve read all the negative stuff on the net and just figured I was one of the lucky ones and have been waiting for some catastrophe to hit me too. I’m glad I found this article, I’ll stop worrying now.
