Rackspace Sucks? Need more than just rack and space?

Heard that Rackspace sucks? How about Rackspace hosting problems? Saw some Rackspace down times, Rack Space hosting complaints or bad customer experiences? Can these negative reviews be trusted? Heard some horror stories about Rackspace.com? Read this report first!
If you are considering to get a hosting account from Rackspace, you may want to (or probably have tried to) search for the keywords “Rackspace sucks” or “Rackspace bad” on Google. However, the result may confuse you. Perhaps you have read tons of good stuff and rave reviews about Rackspace.com thus far.

If you go through each of Googles result pages, it seems there a few unsatisfied customers and clients who have been through some sticky situation with Rackspace. If you search for the keywords “Rackspace sucks”, you see that there are hundreds of search engine result pages (SERPs) returned by Google. Is that a lot of bad things said about one hosting? Assuming all those result pages really talk about why this hosting provider sucked in some ways. There may be a few more result pages when you search for “Rackspace scam”, “Rackspace issues“, or ”Rackspace problems“. Do these hate or complaint sites worry you after you have read so many positive reviews? Did the hate pages make you wonder if Rackspace hosting is any good?

We cannot dismiss the fact that Rackspace is one of the most popular dedicated hosting companies in the market today. Just look at the “Rackspace rocks” pages as compared to the complaints they get. The complaints are miniscule if compared to the satisfied customers.
How Good is Rackspace Managed Hosting?
They do have a few complaints about them but it is not easy for any company to be the dedicated server host with perfect record. The dedicated server field is not the easiest for everybody and there are many inexperience customers who wants to release their frustration because on their lack of experience managing a server, and will go everywhere to do just that.
A major drawback about Rackspace is their price. But you get what you pay for. You cannot get a dedicated server cheap and expect it to satisfy your needs.
Another thing to note is that these complaints are mostly from years ago and mostly from their managed hosting services. This is before cloud computing becomes a popular choice.

The main problem with Rackspace is the sales and pricing. They get you into one price then basically add features and services that good managed companies already provide. I did the pricing a few months back and you could purchase 3 servers with Server Intellect with more ram, Cpu and traffic plus have better support then you could with one Rackspace Server.

Rackspace is expensive, but the technical service is on the whole good (though not good enough to warrant the exhorbitant price)
But as someone else has pointed out the really negative point is that the sales department are way to agressive and so not surprisingly the pricing is not transparent. The very worst is that if for any reason they don’t receive payment on line, they send you an email informing you that your server has been suspended. Even if you have been a customer for 10 years (as we are). I have never encountered a company who treats a good customer so badly. 10 years ago it was quite difficult to find companies which could provide what Rackspace provides, but no longer. There’s plenty of competition which can offer the same service for a third of the price and may well treat you as a valued customer.

having been with Rackspace since 2006 their customer service and general competence has declined so far that I am now looking for a new host. we spend over $5K a month with them for 9 devices. Their technical support is now a joke. I’m convinced they have hamburger flippers in the datacenter.
I tried Rackspace for managed Sharepoint hosting. How many ways can I say beyond horrible???? My site got deleted and they blamed it on my site admin and were not able to recover the site. Oh by the way, they don’t keep crawl logs. There are way too many hosting companies out there to even waste your time with Rackspace. Fanatical support – what a joke. STAY AWAY!
I can speak as both a customer of other hosting companies and an engineer at Rackspace, that indeed Rackspace is a huge fraud. They rely on a lot of parroting word of mouth cheerleading to get their brand name perpetuated through the meta/blogs, banner ads, and target marketing. NOT technical expertise or reliability.
I have worked for the company for years and while it has its benefits as an employee, the management and vision at Rackspace is horrible. The dirty truth most do not know about Rackspace is they hire salespeople in bulk every month, not well rounded, certified, well tech-screened engineers or managers. Most of the people working at Rackspace today are non-technical idiots who pass the buck to a much smaller pool of stressed-out knowledgeable engineers who are leaving to the competition in mass at present.
I am really surprised so many people actually pay premium price for Rackspace, but from what I have seen, those people doing so, tend to be pretty non technical themselves and hence why they are so shocked when they find out how susceptible they are to Rackspace corporate dysfunction, downtime, outages, and horrible support. I honesty encourage all who wish to pay for hosting, to do their research, you might be surprised how little those people you are talking to when they are trying to get you to sign a contract really know about even the basics of hosting. We are currently customers of Earthlink (investigating Rackspace as an email host), and Earthlink’s support is at least as bad as Charles describes from his insider viewpoint at Rackspace.
