Ways to Create Web Hosting Problems
Monday

After looking at hundreds or even thousands of complaints, hate-pages and negative comments about almost every web hosting companies out there, hostingsthatsuck.com came out with this formula on how to get in trouble with a web host provider. Yes, after you have done any of the items below, you can start to say your web host sucks or your web host is bad. Now you can start having web hosting issues quickly with your current or future web host. Try one of our more than 10 ways to start and you will be making web hosting complaints in no time.
- Host a porn site. Or if you are too lazy, just put some porn images on your blog.
- Host a file sharing website on a shared hosting.
- Refuse to use any of the best online backup services such as Carbonite or Mozy as storage. Instead, insist to use your “unlimited” disk-space of your account and dump everything there. The host said you get “unlimited” storage space after all. No limit in what you can store, right?
- Avoid using separate online storage services such as ElephantDrive or Box.net as storage facility. Instead, why not use your “unlimited” diskspace of your account and dump everything there. The host said you get “unlimited” diskspace and having everything in one place is great – web hosting, data backup, and file storage in one location makes life easy.
- Ask your new web host to transfer your old website from the old hosting provider. The more complex the applications you have on the previous provider, the better. Put in some database to spice up the transfer process.
- Register a hostingX-sucks.com domain and host it at hostingX. I am sorry to say that GodaddySucks.com is already registered, guess by whom? Godaddy.com Inc. There are some smart web hosts out there. Sorry to dissapoint you.
- Use expletive when dealing with customer support.
- Start getting 60,000 hits per day on a shared hosting.
- Refuse to deal with tech support with an Indian accent. Argue with the hosting company why they have to outsource their support to India when so many people in your country are jobless.
- Post the username and password of your hosting account on an internet forum to get some help with your PHP program.
- Ask customer support to debug your program.
- Sign-up with the free-domain-for-life package and after a few days, tell the hosting company that you want to move host and you would like to take the domain with you to the new host. You also would like to use their 30-days money back guarantee and demand all your money back.
- Install blackhat programs and leave all the trails behind. If you receive any email about some script exceeding some resource quota, pretend you don’t know about the script.
What is the moral of the story? Basically, 80% of the problems with your website hosting can be avoided. Sometimes we are just ignorant about the webhosts’ TOS and try to push the limits.
I realize that this list is a tongue in cheek statement, and everything is very well stated.
But issue #7 is a real issue.
If a customer can’t understand the tech support, and the tech has difficulty conveying his/her interpretation of American English to the customer; where is the savings for the company that is hiring the outsourced tech?
When the customer’s money is the life blood of the company (especially in this horrible economy), shouldn’t there be some sort of need to oblige the customer rather than the outsourced employee?
I agree with you Brent if the issue is about communication. However, what I am trying to say is try not to be biased if you have to deal with somebody with different accent. Sometimes, communication is not the real issue.
There are a couple of things I don’t get:
If you’re paying for unlimited storage, why would you not want to take advantage of that if your business has lots of CAD files, PDF’s, regulatory documents, research papers, documentary photographs and videos, etc? To have a hosting operation lure you with this feature and then want you to not use it seems disingenuous at best, misleading at worst.
Say you sign up for an unlimited storage and free domain for life account. You’ve done as much research as you can but you’re by no means an expert on web hosting. A lot of times all you have to go on is what the hosting company tells you in their marketing collateral. Three weeks down the road, you begin to realize that your hosting company isn’t going to be able to meet your requirements. What’s wrong with taking your domain name elsewhere and getting a refund?
Read the provider’s TOS carefully before you plan to sign-up and use up the so called “unlimited storage” as infinity storage or a backup drive. Most of them will say “unlimited” is for web storage only. Is your CAD files, PDFs, or office files are to be shared on the web? If not, try something like Box.net for file storage or Carbonite for online backup.
I agree with you about these misleading “unlimited” advertising scheme. There should be a line between false advertising and otherwise acceptable “puffing”.
Energizer said this about their batteries – “It keeps going, and going, and going…” – you don’t really think they invented battery life with infinite life, do you? My wireless provider gives me “unlimited” free landline calls – does that mean I can start calling everyone in the phone directory and sell them my homemade cookies? We will soon accept the “unlimited” slogan as a norm since almost every provider is jumping on the bandwagon. If you insist on the few straight, limited but reliable providers, I highly recommend ICD Soft and Web Faction.
When I said after a few days, I meant after 1 or 2 days, which is too short a time to decide if the host will meet your requirement or even the next hosting will meet your stringent requirement. Three weeks? I think that is fine provided you have researched and know that another hosting can provide what you need.
But getting the domain name for free is another story. Most providers will charge you the domain fee if you are taking it with you somewhere else. That is why I suggest you do not take the domain-for-life feature if you think a domain name is too important for you. Register the domain elsewhere instead. Godaddy or Dotster will do. You can move from host to host without worrying about your domain name. Another suggestion is to get a new hosting plan before canceling the one old one so you get less downtime.
Thanks for clarifying. Clearly, one must read and understand the TOS before signing up.

Great post.
All hosting companies providing unlimited create problem when you try to use resources. It is best to NOT to register with these hosts.
